An AAAA record, like an A record, translates a hostname (domain name) into an IP address. The only difference here is that an A record refers to a ‘normal’ IPv4 address while an AAAA record refers to the ‘new’ IPv6 address.
So you don’t see this type of record much yet, but it is growing. That’s because more and more providers are starting to support IPv6.
