Who is ICANN?

CANN stands for Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. ICANN is a non-profit organization that performs various internet-related tasks. You can think of creating different domain name extensions, distributing IP numbers and assigning domain names. ICANN should not be confused with a registry (such as VeriSign and SIDN) that manage different domain name extensions. However, ICANN does act as an umbrella body when it comes to checking various domain name extensions. Owners of a .biz / .com / .info / .mobi / .name / .net / .org / .tel / .xxx domain names receive an ERRP e-mail or WDRP e-mail every year informing them about the status of the domain name.
