Set up special folders
Folders such as Sent Items, Deleted Mail, Spam, and Drafts can be set up by following the steps below:
- Open Mac Mail.
- On the left side of the list, find the folder that you want to use, such as the Sent Items folder as the folder for your sent messages.
- Click on the folder and choose ‘Mailbox’ at the top of the bar.
- Choose “Use this mailbox as” and select “Mailbox for sent messages.”
- Repeat this process for your Deleted Mail, Spam, and Drafts folders.
The IMAP prefix/prefix
If you are unable to set up the special folders using the steps above, it may be that the IMAP prefix/prefix is not configured correctly. This can cause you to miss certain IMAP folders or have trouble setting up the dedicated folders. To fix this, change the IMAP prefix and then set up the folders. Before you modify the IMAP prefix, it is recommended that you check that the folders are not hidden or simply not set up using the steps above.
Set IMAP Prefix
Here’s how to set up the IMAP prefix:
- Click Mail, then choose Preferences.
- Go to the ‘Accounts’ tab and click on your mailbox.
- Go to the “Advanced” tab.
- For ‘IMAP path prefix’, enter ‘INBOX’ in capital letters.
- Close the preferences window, then choose Save.
- Now choose ‘Mail’ again and click on ‘Stop Mail’.
- Restart Mac Mail.
